Hello dear reader, my name is Vanessa Toh and I’m a dietitian-to-be based in Brisbane, Australia.
Before I go further, here’s a face to my name:
Welcome to Mindful Dietetics, an evidence-based and best-practice-based nutrition service and resource online. These pages provide mindful eating information, hope and support to struggling dieters, carers, families and friends. They also reveal to you the beautiful journey of mindfulness towards health:
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.–World Health Organization
Why do I encourage comments from readers of Mindful Dietetics?
As someone with lived-experiences of eating disorders, I was so relieved to realise that I was not alone in my struggles, shame and fears. Perhaps your comments can provide support and relief to another struggling member of our community of mindful eaters–you’ll never know until you comment 🙂
Why do I provide feature interviews, community initiative write-ups and restaurant reviews?
Only to bring you amazing opportunities to create a nurturing environment that supports your mindful and healthy eating.
Why am I passionate about sharing practical skills and knowledge around mindful eating?
I understand how:
- Eating can be fraught with frustration
- Recovery from disordered eating can be a winding journey
- Family and friends need support too
- Following your heart in addition to your mind is important
Why do I share my lived experiences as a recovering disordered eater?
Simply put: Underneath it all, I’m just like you, a human being. I am no stranger to binge eating, starving, purging, the associated shame and the terror of being found out. I am also no stranger to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, the hope and the renewed appreciation of myself and my environment. Keeping secrets kept me sick and sad, with few opportunities to be accountable for my behaviours.
These reasons reflect action areas of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion.
You will find topics relevant to mindful eating on the right of this page. You may also find tips for surviving the zombie apocalypse. I really hope to hear your insights and I will try to reply without taking ages. (Expedited replies for comments around the zombie apocalypse. In case you didn’t know, I am prone to cheesiness. 🙂 )
